Here is a 1930 staff photograph of the Okehampton and District Co-operative Society Ltd taken outside the shop on the corner of Kempley Road/St James Street.

The van delivery driver is Lewis (Tich) Lobb who had to drive to Tavistock early every morning to collect the fresh bread for the day; although afterwards they baked their own. His largest customer was the Okehampton Artillery Camp, and this was a regular morning delivery. The tall figure in the doorway is Fred Dalton the Manager, with popular Bill Pike on his left. Bill Pike, of course, left to run his Crediton Road shop for many years, a real ‘open all hours’ establishment.

The Butcher’s to the left was Westlake’s which today continues as AL. Martin and Son Ltd.
